Solus and the City is a project consisting of the construction of a small 'Solitude Shed' – a structure based on rural mountain bothies. It was built by a collaborative group of predominantly women and non-binary people at Greendale Playing Fields in East Dulwich in May 2018.

 

Women are paradoxically expected to provide solidity, structure and sanctuary whilst they disproportionately experience unstable positions in housing, work and society. In response, the shed will prompt participants to consider the necessity and availability of physical shelter and time alone in urban environments whilst showcasing women's’ experiences of [or lack of] solitude, self identity and self reliance through writing.

 

The project will bring forward questions about the reclamation and repurposing of space, environmental factors, the ethics and value of temporary structures, and the role of art in society.

The shed, complete with documentation of the building process as well as submissions of written and visual art collected throughout the project, will be exhibiting throughout June as part of London Festival of Architecture 2018 and Antiuniversity Now Festival. The shed is open at all times and free to visit.
